Role overview

ABOUT ECOSIA:

Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees, is one of the world's largest social businesses and the first B Corporation in Germany. As part of our mission to cultivate a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable world, we are planting and protecting forests by enabling people to channel their everyday actions into environmental good. So far our 20 million users have planted over 140 million trees. Our reach is expanding as we continue to grow and plant native and biodiverse trees worldwide!

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Do you want to actively enable our engineers to bring value to millions of users every day and become part of shaping this new role at Ecosia?

We are looking for an Engineering Manager who makes the people around them better engineers and ensures that our best practices and technology keep growing with us. If this is you, come join us in our Berlin office.

Together with the Engineering Management team, you support the development of our software engineers across multiple teams. You contribute to the growth of the engineering organization as a hiring manager and by strengthening our collaborative and inclusive culture. This is your opportunity to become part of an inclusive, cross-functional team and shape a product used by millions of users!

This can either be a temporary contract offer for 18 months (interim) or a permanent position.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE AN IMPACT:

  • You empower engineers to grow through coaching, mentorship, career development, and by motivating them to do their best work.
  • You enable your teams by removing roadblocks, facilitating decisions, resolving tensions, providing the right tools, and guiding the team to be more autonomous and self-sufficient.
  • You inspire an atmosphere of continuous improvement and ensure that engineers continue to learn and share knowledge across teams.
  • You hold regular 1:1s, feedback, and growth conversations to plan and support career development.
  • You ensure performance evaluation and compensation is fair and equitable.
  • You support our recruiters to attract, recruit, and onboard great engineering specialists to build diverse, ever-growing teams.
  • You contribute to facilitating a collaborative and inclusive culture in line with our company values.

YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE:

  • You enjoy developing and growing people and have previous experience with directing, supervising, coaching, and mentoring software engineers of different specializations.
  • You have some experience working in a functional or people lead role (e.g. tech lead, team lead, engineering manager) in software development and know how to apply modern agile engineering practices to ensure continuous delivery (experience with our core technologies welcome, but not a requirement at all).
  • You have hired for engineering positions, embracing diversity and understanding the importance of creating an inclusive workplace.
  • You bias towards action and pragmatism, both in your own work, as well as in your enablement of others, and bring a forward-thinking mindset to continuously empower the team to improve.
  • You believe in servant leadership and bottom-up culture.

We recognize that you may need further development in some areas, and we encourage you to apply even if your profile does not meet all of the requirements for the role: we encourage and support growth and development for everyone.

OUR TECHNOLOGY STACK:

  • Backend: Go and Python services communicating internally through gRPC and publicly through REST
  • Frontend: Nuxt-based Vue applications, making heavy use of SSR
  • Mobile: Firefox fork on iOS, Chromium fork on Android
  • BI: Snowplow for first-party tracking, Airflow for ETL, Redshift-based Looker for dashboards
  • Infrastructure: Kubernetes on AWS through EKS; resources managed through Terraform
  • Tooling: Prometheus/Grafana for monitoring, GitHub/CircleCI for hosting and CI/CD, Docker for containerization

Find all of our tooling in our Tech Radar.

THE HIRING PROCESS:

  • First call with Sabine (Recruiter) (30-45min)
  • Interview with two of our Engineering Managers (60min)
  • Technical Conversation with two of our Engineers (45min)
  • Team Exercise (45min - 15min break - 30min)
  • Final, non-technical interview with CEO and PM (30min)

According to your preference, some of the stages can be combined to reduce time.

All steps are done remotely.

Location

Berlin is the capital and the largest city in Germany and well-known for its amazing festivals, exciting nightlife and a high quality of living. With a population of 3.7 million it is only second to London in the Europe Union, even with one-third of the city's area being composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. Berlin is a city with a deep history, Bismarck, Marx, Einstein, JFK and Bowie, they’ve all shaped – and been shaped by – Berlin.

Often referred to as Europe's newest start-up capital, a new start-up is founded every 20 minutes. The startup industry is set to produce 100,000 new jobs by 2020.

It's no secret that Berlin is cheaper than many of its European counterparts. Office overheads and the price of living are cheaper, which makes it a very attractive place for tech entrepreneurs. Home to HelloFresh, Delivery Hero, and Soundcloud we expect many more household names to be coming out of Berlin in the next few years.
