Working at Dotfile - Build the Leading Platform for Onboarding Orchestration
  • TypeScript

Building an onboarding flow is something most companies dread, especially for businesses operating in regulated industries with strict KYC or KYB requirements. Lengthy onboarding flows are conversion killer and highly resource intensive to develop. With Dotfile, a French startup founded in 2021, teams can set up onboarding flows in minutes and focus on their core product.

We asked Vasco Alexandre, the Co-founder & CEO of Dotfile about the company’s journey so far, as well as their plans for the future and the team they’re looking to build.

Tell us more about Dotfile, what do you do?

We are a SaaS company. Our product allows businesses to build onboarding workflows for their customers or suppliers in a few minutes and without coding. Onboarding flows are challenging to develop and often cause friction for the user. Once implemented they are hard to change.

This is an issue I experienced myself at Lime while working on the onboarding of logistic partners tasked to swap scooter or bike batteries. Our product is a toolbox for companies to tailor the perfect flow for their business, whether they need identity verification, document checks, contract signature, CRM integrations or more.

Thanks to Dotfile, marketplaces, fintech or insurance companies with complex KYC or KYB requirements are able to onboard users faster and increase revenue.

What has been your biggest achievement over the last year and what are your plans for the future?

2021 was year zero for Dotfile. We went from idea to MVP in a few months, recruited our first 3 employees, launched a website, and got our first beta testers and learned a ton speaking with them. 2022 will be about acceleration. We have a clear product vision and ambitious goals for the year to come.

What is your tech stack and why have you decided to use it?

Onboarding is so critical for our users that we wanted to have a solid foundation from the get go, that would ensure maximum reliability and security. We also pay a lot of attention to developer experience. That’s why we chose to build with TypeScript from the database (TypeORM, Nestjs, GraphQL) to frontend (React, ApolloClient, CharkaUI). We have a monorepo managed by Nx and use tools like eslint, prettier, jest, cypress, Gitlab CI, k8s.

Having such a modern tech stack definitely helps when it comes to attracting the best talents.

What is the tech team currently working on?

Dotfile is all about connecting different blocks to build the perfect onboarding workflow depending on your business needs. This implies that we need to develop a lot of integrations with third party-services. We are also working on empowering our users with more data about their onboarding workflows in order to help them continuously improve. It involves building strong analytics capabilities.

How would you describe the culture at Dotfile?

We aspire to build a work environment that is challenging and fun. We have a bias for execution and are doers at heart. Our engineers love the fact that we are product and tech focused. We have fully embraced remote work from day 1, but that doesn’t prevent us from meeting occasionally in Paris or somewhere in Europe.

We are also lucky to be born out of eFounders, the# 1 European SaaS startup studio that created companies like Aircall, Spendesk or Front. This makes the entrepreneurship journey far more fun, with daily interactions with other companies from the studio and eFounders core team.

What is the interview process like at Dotfile?

We have a 4-steps process that starts with an interview with me to discuss the candidate aspirations and learn about their motivation for joining an early stage startup. We also have 2 fit interviews with our CTO and eFounders Talent Acquisition team, and finally a technical assessment where the candidate brings some of their code for discussion. We are able to move from the first meeting to offer in one or two weeks.

What’s the onboarding process like?

We usually spend the first morning discussing the company goals, vision and values. Then we organize a round of meetings with various team members who will share what they work on at the moment and walk our new engineers through the code base. We always have tasks ready for new recruits that will help them gradually understand our stack and the overall project.

Finally, why should someone work for Dotfile?

We’re still a young company, joining at this stage is a guarantee that you can have a huge impact on the company trajectory and that there is ample room for professional growth. We operate in a very exciting space - no-code SaaS tools - which has the potential to make millions of companies’ lives easier. Finally, by joining an eFounder startup, you are certain to be surrounded by the best of the best and to be in for quite a ride!

If that sounds like a challenge you’d like to embark on, you should definitely check out Dotfile’s open roles and apply today!
